“Tools for Engaging with Culturally Diverse Picture Books”

Whether you’re a teacher, parent, or literacy volunteer, join us to expand your skills and comfort engaging with culturally diverse picture books.
Author and educator Margy Burns Knight will use a selection of Talking Walls illustrations and companion titles to introduce and demonstrate visual learning strategies (inspired by the 3-question protocol of Visual Thinking Strategies), a discussion-based approach including all four domains of language learning, and an effective tool across the curriculum. Participants will engage in the process of responding to an illustration by sharing what they see.
Dr. Krista Aronson and author-illustrator Anne Sibley O’Brien will introduce the Diverse BookFinder, a circulating collection of contemporary picture books featuring people of color located at Ladd Library, and ways of accessing and utilizing the collection. They will also present an overview of how children learn about racial and cultural differences, why diverse picture books matter, and how they can support positive attitudes and relationships across differences.
The evening will conclude with a discussion on classroom applications for culturally diverse picture books.
